The Gen Y Poster Boy of pop culture ignorance…
Garrett shows us once again why shows like the Gilmore Girls, Family Guy and MST3K will not survive much longer. To Garrett’s credit, it’s not just him. Billy, our high school intern at work, shows the same ignorance of any pop culture reference from before 1989.
The list continues below.
“Turn on Your Heartlight”
Flock of Seagulls
Woolworth’s (which, by the way, are still around in the UAE!)
Dime Store
Rosie the Riveter
Houston Knights
Walter Kronkite “Isn’t he a sports star?” says Garrett. Jinny thinks he says “Isn’t he a porn star?” which is even funnier.
You Can’t Do That on Television
Downtown Julie Brown
Haircut 100 (Jinny thinks this unfair, since she doesn’t even know who they are…)
Actually, it’s “Houston Knights”, and the last time I saw that show was when I was with the UH Marching Band in Nice, France. They were showing it on the TV as “Texas Police”. :-)
It’s always amusing to remember that that show’s opening credits (which supposedly showed Houston) included shots of a mass-transit rail system… which Houston wouldn’t get until 15 years later, and even then it was a light rail line. :-)
They still have Woolworth’s in Germany too.
Man, that’s sick. That you were in France, that is. :)
And the Woolworth’s in the UAE was really pretty nice…
Hey now. Nice was actually a very beautiful city and I wouldn’t mind going back. Then again, I get the impression that the whole French Mediterranean coast is like that.
Now, Paris, on the other hand… that one I’ll avoid going back to if I can at all help it.
Actually Sean I do know who the Flock of Seagulls and Walter Kronkite are. Just FYI. But everything else, yea im completely clueless
Ummm…have I mentioned that I’m going to Paris in January?
Well, maybe they’ll be showing some exciting episodes of “Texas Police” for you to watch there. And I’m sure that France is great. It’s just unfortunately filled with French people. :P
Thanks, Billy for being a good sport. And Garrett, please do not take this to heart. It’s not your fault I’m old.
Was that “sick” meaning good, or “sick” meaning bad?
I don’t get this new-fangled lingo these days….. :)
No, that was “sick” as in “don’t those people eat snails?”
I think if “phat” is cool, and “fat” is not, that it should be “psyck” and “sick.” Anyone else think so?
Garrett does know a whole lot of things we could never begin to know - not that we’d want to mind you . . .
Hey I’ve made buttons for everyone’s websites. You can see them on the links sidebar on my website, but feel free to grab it and put it on your own page.
